In addition to these programs, WNCAP also
offers educational material and resources which include:

newsletters, other publications and videos
● Educational brochures
● Guidelines for living with and caring for an HIV+ person
● HIV/AIDS statistics from sources such as the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention
● Information about Safer Sex
● HIV-Positive Speakers Bureau is available for presentations to any group or
organization that would like to hear about experiences from people living
with HIV/AIDS
The coordinator
for this program is Michael Harney. Project Safeguard focuses on
reaching gay and
bisexual men and is broken into many programs:
Street and Bar Outreach
Includes the distribution of
condoms, lube, dental dams, literature, and HIV, STD, Hepatitis
and harm reduction prevention education materials and referrals
to HIV, STD and Hepatitis testing and counseling.
HIV Prevention Instruction
Free HIV/STD/Hepatitis prevention
instruction provided upon request to Alcohol and Substance Abuse
treatment centers, jails and prisons, homeless shelters, schools
and various community venues.
Prevention for Positives
Programs
provided by Prevention Staff for those already infected.
Women
and Minority Outreach is coordinated by Michele Martin and
consists of several programs. These cover a
basic HIV/AIDS/STD overview, safer sex discussion and
demonstration, negotiation skills, alcohol and substance
use/abuse in relation to HIV transmission
and other services. Some of the programs offered are:
Agency
and Organizational Outreach
HIV prevention education in agencies and organizations whose
primary clientele are women.
In-Home Risk Reduction Sessions
Sessions which take place in the homes of women of childbearing
age, specifically minority women, which provide HIV/STD risk
reduction education.
Prevention for Positives
Programs
provided by Prevention Staff for those already infected.
Lay
Health Advisors
This outreach uses natural leaders of at-risk neighborhoods to
provide HIV prevention peer education, counseling and referral.
SISTA
Sisters Informing Sisters on
Topics about AIDS, a five session Centers for Disease Control
approved effective intervention for African American women. This
program has been offered in the Hillcrest community center,
Hillcrest Apartment 17-A, Lee Walker Heights community center,
and the Reid Center.This program qualifies for community service
hours for the Asheville Housing Authority.

Comprehensive sexual health
education provided.
